Introduction of a new security charge for Maritime Cargo – Import & Export.

On 1st February 2004 new security charges will be introduced at the ports of Felixstowe and Thamesport for both import and export cargo. Other ports are expected to follow suit sometime in the future.

Ports are required to improve security under the Anti-Terrorism Crime and Security Act 2001, and specifically the International Ship and Port facilities Security Code (IPSS) which requires legal compliance by 30th June 2004.

We are advised that in order to comply with IPSS the ports are having to employ more security staff, perimeter fencing, and enhance access controls. According to the port operators, UK Government has given no funding for such measures to be introduced and expects traders – importers and exporters, to meet the cost.

The charge will be debited to the clearing agent and we will therefore have no alternative than to pass the cost on to our customers. The charges differ at each port and are as follows, per container:-

                                      Felixstowe              Thamesport

Import                             £10.50                   £7.50         per full container

Export                             £5.50                     £5.50         per full container

As soon as we are advised of other ports intentions we will notify you accordingly.
