of severe congestion in moving containers to/from and via such ports. Whilst at this stage it is known when the situation will return to normal
, in order to address the additional costs that will resultfrom the congestion, TACA wishes to announce that it will forward publish in its relevant Eastbound and Westbound
Tariffs, a temporary U.S. West Coast Congestion Surcharge (TWCS), effective 9th November 2002, at $500 per teu.

EU Wood Packing Regulations - Exports to China
17th September 2002
Effective 1 October 2002, China will impose emergency quarantine measures against wood packing from the EU. Wood packing used in EU exports to China (including Hong Kong) has to be free of all bark and must be heat-treated, fumigated or undergo other forms of treatment approved by China.
Imports must be accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate issued by the official quarantine authorities in the source country proving that they have passed the relevant treatment. Wood packing that has undergone treatment should display a marking stating how, where and by whom the treatment has been carried out.
Technical standards for pest-control treatment will be announced at a later date. Exporters of goods with no wood packing should present "no wood packing declaration".
Failure to comply with the new requirements will result in either fumigation treatment at destination, or be returned to origin. Chinese importers will no doubt seek to recover costs of same from UK/EU exporters.

15th July 2002
At a recent IATA conference in Holland, airlines voted to amend the volumetric weight calculation from 6000cm3 per kilo down to 5000cm3 per kilo effective in October 2002. This means a shipper who currently pays airfreight on volume will see a 20% increase in cost. As an example; a shipment of 9m3 weighing 1000kgs would currently be charged as a volumetric weight of 1500kgs (6:1). As of October the same shipment would be charged as 1800kgs (5:1)
